  The Kimberley Process (KP) is an international certification system created to stop the trade of conflict diamonds , also known as blood diamonds . These are rough diamonds used by rebel groups to finance wars against governments. The initiative aims to ensure that diamonds sold in global markets do not fund violence, human rights abuses, or armed conflicts. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) officially began in 2003 after global concern over civil wars in African countries such as Sierra Leone, Angola, and Liberia.
